Safeguarding - Is everyone's responsibility!

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is best defined by the government as:

'Protecting children from maltreatment; preventing impairment of children's mental health and physical health or development; ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes'. It is our duty to:

Take actions to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm. This is the responsibility of everyone who comes into contact with children.
Protecting children from maltreatment.
Preventing impairment of children’s health or development.
Ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care.
Take action to enable all children to have the best outcomes

At Stanton-in-Peak Church of England Primary School the main Designated Safeguarding Lead is Mrs Alexia Wyer and our Designated Safeguarding Lead is Mr Jonathan Figg. Our key aims are to ensure;

We have arrangements are in place for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Everyone at Stanton-in-Peak C of E Primary School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children. The school pays full regard to the DfES guidance ‘Keeping Children Safe in Education’.

We endeavour to create a safe, positive school atmosphere through our teaching and learning, pastoral support and care for our pupils. We work closely with families and external agencies to ensure we are keeping our pupils safe.

Through our curriculum and nurturing environment we make sure that our children to achieve their full potential by:

being as physically and mentally healthy as possible
experiencing good quality education opportunities
living in a safe environment
learning and working in a safe environment
experiencing emotional well-being
feeling loved and valued
receiving support from a network of reliable and affectionate relationships
learning to look after themselves
coping with everyday living
having a sense of identity and a positive image of themselves
developing their confidence and their interpersonal skills

We ensure that all appropriate measures are applied in relation to everyone who works in the school who is likely to be perceived by the children as a safe and trustworthy adult including volunteers and staff employed by contractors. Safer recruitment practice includes scrutinising applicants, verifying identity and academic or vocational qualifications, obtaining professional and character references, and checking previous employment history. It also includes undertaking interviews and DBS (Disclosure Barring Service) checks.

Termly Safeguarding Collective Worship:

During one Collective Worship each term there will be a focus on safeguarding, This means we will be talking to the children about how to keep themselves safe. We will help the children understand that it is their right to be happy and safe and to encourage the understanding that any problem or worry that they may have is legitimate, and to share their worries – big or small – with their trusted adult; at home, at school, or with ChildLine.

The assemblies will be led by Mrs Wyer and the content delivered in a sensitive and age appropriate way.

During the Collective Worship will we aim to give children:

An understanding of different forms of abuse, including bullying, and an ability to recognise the signs of harm or abuse
Knowledge of how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse
An awareness of how to get help and sources of help, including ChildLine.

If you have a concern for a child which you believe to be an immediate child protection concern then you should report this through Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190. This is a 24 hour 365 days a year contact and referral service for children, young people and their families. These should be cases where you believe require urgent action where the child’s safety and wellbeing (significant harm) is at immediate risk.

A Call Derbyshire Customer Care Assistant is trained to take all the appropriate information from you, they will record this on our framework system and then this will be passed through to Starting Point.

If you are concerned about any young person in respect of their emotional wellbeing or you feel that they are vulnerable to harm or abuse and you are uncertain whether they are receiving support you may wish to contact one of the agencies listed. Many of the agencies have established links and will ensure that your concern or query is directed to the appropriate agency.
